What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low impact, mind-body conditioning system that allows strength training while minimizing excess tension and strain on your joints. The Pilates method simultaneously restores and increases flexibility, freedom, ease, foundational strength, stamina, endurance, joint function, and joint range of motion. Pilates is a great way to improve your overall quality of life, improve posture, improve balance, decrease stress, decrease aches and pains, overcome injuries, and reduce the risk of future injuries and falls. Pilates exercises can be done with or without equipment. Always remember that Joseph Pilates found it more important to focus on the quality of the exercise being done, not the quantity of the exercises being done.

Pilates is most effective when done a minimum of 2-4 times a week. We have a whole entire body that requires love and attention.

The History of Pilates

Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany sometime around 1880. As a young person Joseph was plagued by a series of health issues that weakened both his body and respiratory system. Determined to alter his fate Joseph began experimenting with many forms of movement, exercise and meditation. Joseph felt that he needed to strengthen his mind, body and spirit. Through this, Joseph’s method of Contrology was born; today this method is known as Pilates.

During World War 1 Joseph was held in a civilian camp by the British. This is because they considered him an “enemy alien” due to his German citizenship. While in the camp Joseph began working with others applying his method of Contrology. Joseph was now using his method to not only keep himself strong and healthy but also those around him. After witnessing this the Brits made Joseph a hospital orderly. While working as an orderly Joseph began experimenting and attaching springs to hospital beds. This led to the invention of the Cadillac, his first piece of exercise equipment. In 1926 Joseph immigrated to New York City and opened his first studio. While teaching in New York Joseph worked with a broad range of students. His clients included, boxers, businessmen, opera singers, injured war veterans, ballerinas and dancers.

Although Joseph Pilates is no longer with us, he would be so proud to see that the Pilates method is transforming the way people age.

AISWhat is Active Isolated Stretching (AIS)?

Just like Pilates, AIS is a great way to improve your overall quality of life, improve posture, improve balance, decrease stress, decrease aches and pains, overcome injuries, and reduce the risk of future injuries and falls. Like Pilates, AIS also simultaneously restores and increases flexibility, freedom, ease, foundational strength, stamina, endurance, joint function, and joint range of motion.

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is a systematic method of muscle lengthening and facial release. The AIS method was developed over 40 years ago by Aaron Mattes. It is the most comprehensive stretching and strengthening method currently available. AIS addresses the entire body, every joint from head to toe, including the hands and feet. AIS releases both deep and superficial facial layers. AIS also breaks up existing adhesions and scar tissue, allowing unrestricted movement.

AIS is most effective when done a minimum of 2-4 times a week. Again, we have a whole entire body that requires love and attention.

AIS is also a great way to positively impact and transform the aging process.
